Some time ago, I found this amusing post on Pinterest:
I suppose this improvisation would work in an apartment full of medical-field students, but most of us probably feel like the commenter.
We can learn a lot about our characters from how they respond when we put them in situations they're (literally or figuratively) not equipped for. Do they abandon their original plan and fly by the seat of their pants? Do they use the tools they have in creative-but-not-practical-for-most-people ways, like the original poster? Do they come up with something obscure but brilliant? Do they make excuses or gripe about what a great job they could do if they had the right resources?
And—perhaps most important—does their response change over the course of the story as they grow and develop?
Try it with the main character of your WIP and post your results in the comments or on the Facebook page. I'm curious!
Write on,
Candice
