WRITING-PROMPT WEDNESDAY: VETERAN STORIES

Ironically for someone who makes her living with words, I've been realizing lately that I have a hard time expressing myself about certain subjects. My country, and consequently Veterans Day (which, oddly, doesn't have an apostrophe), is one of them.

In contexts like talking about veterans, we hear certain phrases so often that they feel trite. Yet when I try to come up with something new to say, it seems overblown and pompous. And especially right now, it's unfashionable to love the United States.

But according to these admittedly incomplete numbers, at least a few million people have thought it was worth dying for.

For all its flaws, I do love the United States. And I don't know how to adequately express my thanks to all the people who've offered everything to protect it, its ideals, and millions of people they don't even know.

So to all who've served, all who serve, and all who love them and soldier on in their own way while they're apart: thank you. And welcome home.

Now I put it to you for this Writing-Prompt Wednesday:

What's an inspiring story you've heard about our military personnel, past or present?

Write on and happy Veterans Day,
