CREATING A FANTASY LANGUAGE? TRY THIS TIP

Updated: Oct 10, 2020

Besides my English-tutoring student I mentioned last week, I've also been tutoring world history and conversational French. My students for French are an adorable brother and sister who were going to a French-immersion school before the pandemic, and apparently their school is either still online-only or closed altogether.

Tutoring French is new to me, and I no longer have my beginning-French textbook, so I've been trawling the internet to find resources. One of the more intriguing ones has been this Pinterest post:

(I can't fit the whole image into one screenshot, so I've put a link underneath it.)

It struck me that this could also be a super helpful source for creating fantasy languages. These are some of the most frequently used terms in any language, so anything you write in a fantasy language will need to use some of these terms eventually. Depending on the tech level and time period of your fantasy society, you might need to substitute some words (you won't need, say, a word for T-shirt if everyone wears medieval-European-style clothing), but this is a great place to start.

Try it out and let me know how it goes!

Write on,

Candice
